Otterburn Chess Table

About

Named after the ancient Northumberland village, the site of the 1388 Battle of Otterburn, this chess table is a testament to nearly a decade of experimentation by NOVOCASTRIAN, refining materials, techniques, and design to create something truly exceptional. Commissioned by a discerning client as the ultimate stage for strategic battles, it embodies our dedication to craftsmanship and materiality.

A solid, etched brass top sets the scene, while patinated and brushed brass elegantly wrap the fumed oak frame and leather-lined drawers. Precision-crafted solid brass playing pieces rest within meticulously arranged oak dividers, ensuring every element of the game reflects the same level of artistry and attention to detail.

DESTINATION

London, England

Etched, patinated, and brushed brass wrap the fumed oak and leather drawers

Installing the solid, etched brass top

“Our region has the most castles of anywhere in the UK due to the centuries of fighting between various Clans and Kings, involving the English, the Scottish, the Vikings, the Normans, and the Celts, amongst others. Consequentially the borders are very much battle-hardened, a tradition which even as recently as the last century has permeated the local culture, our region providing the most soldiers to both World War efforts outside of London. To this day a huge military training camp exists near Otterburn.”

The patination process of the brass base

Solid brass playing pieces sit amongst leather-lined solid oak dividers. Drawers open on hidden soft-close runners.
