“Otterburn is an ancient village set in deepest, darkest Northumberland, near to the once treacherous Anglo-Scottish border. Its significance dates back to 1388 and the Battle of Otterburn.
“Our region has the most castles of anywhere in the UK due to the centuries of fighting between various Clans and Kings, involving the English, the Scottish, the Vikings, the Normans, and the Celts, amongst others. Consequentially the borders are very much battle-hardened, a tradition which even as recently as the last century has permeated the local culture, our region providing the most soldiers to both World War efforts outside of London. To this day a huge military training camp exists near Otterburn.
“I find chess to be a hugely evocative game, the analogy of a medieval battlefield is of course unmistakable. It’s the closest to commanding a military conflict that most of us will get. For many locals here, myself included, the idea of Otterburn evokes historical battles and the more modern military base, which is where the idea for the name arose.”
